Birds of the Coorong

The Coorong and lower lakes is recognized as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar conservation act (1975). It is home to over 200 different bird species, however most significantly the wetlands in the Coorong support the life of rare and migratory birds that travel far distances in search of food and refuge. The Coorong is teeming with bird life, however here we have just provided you with a small snapshot including some of our more rare and elusive birds to watch out for along your travels and while on tour with us!

Many birds across the world are vulnerable to habitat degradation, climate change, human disturbance & predation from cats, dogs, and foxes. However, work is constantly underway to improve their habitat and restore the Coorong’s health in hope to stabilize populations and keep ecosystems flourishing. Education, engagement and acknowledgement of the wonderful birdlife here in the Coorong is a great step in the right direction.
